There are only 4 weeks to go to the Thredbo's opening weekend for the 2019 Snow Season and the buzz is building.? On the weekend of the??8th to 10th of June the party?starts and it goes on for months.? There may indeed be snow on this auspicious weekend and there will certainly be the official Blessing of the Snow service in the Thredbo Chapel.? However? skiing and snowboarding are not necessarily "Top of Mind" for the crowd that gathers?for the ?Opening Weekend. ?This is a serious, 3 days and 3 nights of celebration for young and old.
The Village Square parties on the opening weekend are legendary and this year is no different with 5 hours of non stop tunes booked.? Heading the bill are the?Aussie electronic duo "the Bag Raiders"? backed up by?Mickey Kojak, Purple Sneakers and Close Encounters.

Thredbo's opening weekend fireworks are also the stuff of legend and if you have yet to experience?them you are in for something special.? The Valley fills with the booms and crackles of the fireworks with some truly massive explosions raining showers of glittering colour over the whole village.? ?The best place to see the fireworks is from a balcony at the Lantern Apartments Thredbo with a glass of bubbles and a full pano view of the whole event.???.
The kids will be jumping from dawn to dusk with street performers, ?special kids activities, bobsleds and more.?A family favourite is the Ice Sculptures with Kenji Ogawa who carves wonders out of solid blocks of ice.? With face painting, kids play zone and even snow man building classes there is plenty of action for the kids over the weekend.
A classic event of the opening weekend is the Sunday Long Lunch in the village square.? Hundreds don their best winter coats to join in a sumptuous lunch served on the Snowy Mountains Longest table.? Sponsored by GH Mumm,? there is plenty of good cheer at this lunch but if you are interested book now because it always sells out early.
The other attraction of the Thredbo Opening Weekend 2019 are the massive sales in the Retail outlets both in Thredbo and in Jindabyne. ?If you are looking for a bargain on Ski Gear, Snowboards or clothing then the June Long Weekend is a great time to shop in the mountains. The Opening Weekend 2nd Hand Sale at the Jindabyne Memorial Hall is also a great place to shop for super bargains on 2nd hand gear and even some clearance new gear. ?Just be sure to be at the door at 9am because it is a feeding frenzy early on and the best?bargains go quickly.
