Last Friday was an exciting day in Thredbo.? Close to 100 business operators,? Thredbo residents and staff gathered in the Alpine Hotel to hear the CEO of Amalgamated Holdings, David Seargeant commit to a new phase of development in the village. ? Several projects have already been approved for the coming summer including the redevelopment of the Friday Flat and? High Noon base areas, the extension of snow making to the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift and Eagles Way and a feasibility study for the construction of? a replacement for the Rams head Chairlift.
The redevelopment of Friday Flat will see an additional 30% in ski-able area added to the purpose built beginner slope.? At the same time the bottom of the High Noon super trail will be redirected so the more advanced skiers and boarders don't have to cross paths with beginners as they head to the lift for another run. Work is due to start in January for this project.? The addition of snow making to the Eagle's Way run at the top of the Kosciuszko Express will complete the snow making cover on the full length and breadth of the Crackenback Super Trail.? This last section of snow making will help to increase both the length of the season for top to bottom skiing but also the quality of skiing available.? Eagles Way? is notoriously patchy at the start of the season if there has not been a lot of natural snow.? This new section of Snow Making Coverage will mean skiers and boarders can get off the chair? and slide straight on to a man made snow cover that will extend all the way to the village. The only person who may not be happy about that is? "Thredbo Ski Repairs".....
After half a century of reliable service the Rams Head Chairlift? is being decommissioned and? Thredbo has committed to a? feasibility study on replacing the iconic chair.? Options for the new lift could include extending its range to cover some part of the Basin Ski Area? which would open up? fantastic opportunities for long chairlift serviced, all weather runs through Cannonball, True? Blue and the Little Beauty.? With the recent snow-making developments in these areas, this? could become an advance terrain retreat for those high wind days when the Kosciuszko Express is not running.? The results of the feasibility study should be available by November this year so stay tuned.
Other areas in the spotlight for redevelopment include the Village precinct with plans for improving accessibility to the Village Square and giving a boost to the retail offering and, although nothing has been said officially Thredbo could be home to? upmarket boutique style hotel in the not too distant future.
