The Snowy River runs 500km from its source on the main range near Mt Kosciusko all the way to the Bass Straight at Marlo in Victoria.?? Since the Jindabyne dam wall was completed in 1967 the river has received less than 1% of the original flow from its vast Alpine headwaters.? However on? the 4th of November things started looking up for the dry old river when the Snowy Hydro Corporation opened the gates on the Jindabyne Dam sending 17 billion litres of water downstream over the course of 10 days.? This release is part of an often wavering commitment by state and federal governments to return environmental flows of up to 21% to the Snowy.? (Click here for the Video.)
In the early days, the Snowy River could produce some breathtaking floods,? particularly in spring when heavy rains combined with snow melt from the mountains.? In one particularly large event a punt, used for carrying vehicles across the river at Dalgety, was picked up by flood waters and deposited 40 kilometers down stream.? However since the dam was built the section below Jindabyne has been a sorry series of silted up pools in a once raucous gorge.
While the latest release sent down the river at Jindabyne dam was nothing like the torrents of old it was still enough to attract some excited Kayak paddlers from a Blue Mountains canoe club who became the first people in 40 years to successfully paddle that section of the Snowy. ?The report they gave was one of ?some great paddling but lots of sections where the river bed is choked by trees.?? At least none of the trees choked the Kayakers!? I am not sure it was an experience they will repeat in a hurry?.
The release of water from the Jindabyne dam was a spectacular sight, with an aerated plume blowing out of release gates designed to reduce the impact on the nearby river bed.?? The jet of water launched from these gates was well worth seeing.?
