Once off the chairlift you’ll gradually climb to the summit, 2,228 metres above sea level, in time to witness a spectacular alpine sunset. Along with a local expert guide and a small group of walkers you’ll gain knowledge of the flora and fauna of this unique high-altitude region, enjoy stunning 360 degree alpine views and the final colourful flourish of the sun as it dips down below the horizon. Here are some of the best highlights the walk has to offer:
1. Learn About the Alpine Environment & Geological Features
Walking with a local guide means you’ll have the chance to learn about the flora and fauna that live in this high-altitude environment. You’ll discover this other-worldly landscape is home to numerous hardy species such as marsh marigolds, snow daisies and carpet heath that can survive up to six months of the year under the snow pack. Your guide will also point out interesting geological characteristics of this alpine landscape such as glacier lakes, cascading waterfalls and granite rock formations.
2. Conquer the Summit of Australia’s Highest Peak
Upon reaching the summit stand tall on Australia’s highest peak and enjoy 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. From here you can see the Main Range, the Australian Alps and the Bogong Peaks. You’ll have the opportunity to soak up the achievement, take photos and refuel with a well deserved summit snack, plus a hot chocolate brewed by your guide.
