Guided Lunar Eclipse Walk Highlights

From the summit of Mt Kosciuszko see a spectacular alpine sunset, then watch the moon rise and give way to a full moon lunar eclipse. Experience this awesome celestial occurrence along with a small group of walkers and a local guide. You can count yourself lucky to witness this event, not many people can say they’ve seen a blood moon from the highest point in Australia. Here are some of the best highlights the walk has to offer:

1. Unique Guided Commentary

You will start your journey to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko in the late afternoon under the watchful expertise of a local guide. Learn about the unique and beautiful alpine landscape you’re walking through, discover the best spots for photo opportunities and see interesting flora and fauna along the way. From early summer there are a plethora of wildflowers in bloom and interesting animals such as broad-toothed rats, dusky antechinus and mountain grasshoppers.

2.  Catch a Kosciuszko Sunset & Moonrise

After a two hour or so walk you’ll reach the top of Mt Kosciuszko and stand tall on Australia’s highest summit. As the sun slips down over the distant ranges you’ll have ample time to find the best spot to view the spectacular alpine sunset, with colours all the more vivid thanks to the clear mountain air. Enjoy a hot chocolate brewed by your guide and a summit snack while you wait for the full moon to become clear among the stars.

3. Experience a Lunar Eclipse

This full moon walk has the added bonus of a Lunar Eclipse which is a rare celestial event and only happens when the sun, earth and moon are fully aligned. The spectacle of the blood moon occurs as the earth blocks light from reaching the moon leaving a stunning red and orange orb. Not many people can say they’ve sat on the top of Mt Kosciuszko and witnessed a lunar eclipse. It’s definitely one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ moments.

4. Stay Safe with a Local Guide

Due to chairlift closing times, hikers are driven up the the mountain in 4 x 4 troop carriers to the start of the Kosciuszko Track and returned to Thredbo Village at the end of the walk. This isn’t a walk you want to do self-guided as paths can become slippery with ice and dew, and there is potential for getting disoriented in the dark. Weather conditions are not always favourable in the mountains, so at all points your guide is there to provide valuable information on how to keep warm and dry should the conditions change unexpectedly.
