Best Thredbo Mountain Biking Trails For Young Families
Posted on Thursday, 15th of January 2015
It’s all about the ‘screen time’ these days with the young ones and for many families it’s increasingly difficult to find things for kids to do on school holidays, without them returning to “can I watch TV?” or “can I go on the iPad?”.
Truth be told, the same could be said about adults spending too much time on the laptop and taking work home with them too. Sometimes the best thing is to pile kids and bikes in the car and go on a road trip in search of child-friendly Thredbo mountain biking trails.
Thredbo holidays with kids
Thredbo comes into its own in summer. There are a plethora of things to do in Thredbo that are great for families, such as bobsledding, the leisure centre, golf, fly fishing, walks and great restaurants. It is also a bike-friendly village.
A common sight is small children pushed along on toddler bikes with long handles, mastering their trainer wheels in the village square minus the car traffic or wheeling along past chalets and restaurants enjoying the space and the peace.
Traffic speeds are controlled, and smaller kids can’t get in too much trouble if parents feel like drinking a coffee and reading the papers in the sunshine.
Daniel from Thredbo sports has been working in Thredbo for three years and recommends the Pump Track for very young ones.
“It’s a 100m closed circuit track on the village green, numbered 13 on the mountain bike trail map”.
He also recommends Kosciuszko Flow Trail, Lower Mountain Traverse and Golf Course as intermediate trails for slightly more skilled younger riders (numbered 7,8 and 9) on the trail map as well as the Pipeline path (number 3).
He is hesitant to recommend a certain age limit for riders to attempt these Thredbo mountain bike trails, aside from suggesting parents should monitor whether they believe their child could handle these trails. “I’ve seen some 7 year olds on the Kosciuszko Flow Trail (number 7) and they are pretty skilled for their age”.
Valley Trail Touring from Point A to Point B
Thredbo has guided mountain bike tours that are great for families especially if you’re using the trails for the very first time, or nervous about taking their kids on their own and prefer the reassurance of an expert guide.
For a tour that includes bike hire, helmet and full body armour, the cost is $80 per person, and $30 just for the tour if you have your own bike and equipment.
Tours can be booked on the estore and are run on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays, right up until the start of May, and leave at 10am in Thredbo Village.
Trails pass alongside some spectacular Australian bush scenery, the smell of the earth and the sounds of rushing river making it a spectacular family experience. Riders need only ride in one direction with two pick up options for the trip back to Thredbo village, 12 midday at the Diggings and 12.15pm at Lake Crackenback.
