Thredbo One Hit Wonder Festival

For the past 6 years Spring in Thredbo has not just been about sunny days and skiing in T shirts.  It has also been about the biggest jump the southern hemisphere has ever seen and a crew of crazy free skiers prepared to launch themselves off it.   The Thredbo One Hit Wonder Festival is back  from September 9th and in true Thredbo style the party is on with the One Hit Wonder Mountain Festival from September 12 to 14 bringing world class DJs and performers to the Village for the weekend to celebrate the skiing and the spring. Check out the video from last year….

It is not just about the big air this year.  In a  fascinating new format,  the winning One Hit Wonder athletes are offered a DEAL or NO DEAL choice after each round of jumping, with the degree of difficulty going up each time and culminating in the biggest air and gnarliest tricks on the last day to grab the remaining prize pool.  With  $10,000 up for grabs for this years One Hit Wonder, there is plenty of dealing to be done.  The Thredbo One Hit Wonder is the only gold ranked AFP (Association of Freeskiing Professionals) event in the southern hemisphere and the prize money says it all.  The format looks like this:

ROUND 1: No Spinning (Straight Air’s and Straight flip’s only)

ROUND 2: 360-540’s only.

ROUND 3: 900-1080’s only.

ROUND 4: Twice Round Round (720’s, double flips, double corks only).

FINAL ROUND: Best Big Air trick as judged by AFP (three jumps, highest score counts).
