For a bite to eat right on the mountain, check out these tasty options.
AVALANCHE CAFE & BBQ This little cafe is located at the base of Crackenback Chairlift. The coffee here is excellent and there is a good range of breakfast and lunch options. The BBQ offers very quick service for skiers who are cruising on the high speed quad chair. It is a great place to grab a coffee without breaking up a good ski day.
EAGLE’S NEST The Eagle’s nest is at the top of the Crackenback Quad Chair. They serve simple mountain food for lunches and snacks and a great value breakfast if you come up the chair and decide that skiing is too much of a challenge. The views are great and it is a warm place to go if you have had a cold ride on the chairlift. Open most of the year. For an exciting night out and a free Gondola Ride, the Restaurant also offers evening meals on selected nights during peak periods.
FROSTBITE This is a very appropriate name for this little out door cafe at the top of the High Noon super trail. They have some shelter from the wind and some outdoor gas heaters that take the chill off. The food here is fast and fulfilling. It is definitely the choice for the serious skier who wants a tasty snack but doesn’t want to waste skiing time.
FRIDAY’S This is definitely the biggest restaurant on the mountain. Located at the base of the “Easy Does It” chairlift at Friday Flat. The Food is pretty standard fare with a choice of “Take-away” style items like: Pies, Chicken and Chips and more sit down fare like lasagnas. There is also a BBQ hut outside for quick service of drinks and snacks. More at http://www.thredbo.com.au/in-the-village/dining/shopping.asp?id=9&scid=mountain_dining
KAREELA This restaurant offers an option for those lazy days where the skiing is alright but it is not great. A cold beer and a long lunch with a great view is a great alternative . The location on the side of the Crackenback Supertrail offers plenty of passing entertainment. More at http://www.thredbo.com.au/in-the-village/dining/shopping.asp?id=43&scid=Mountain_Dining
MERRITTS RESTAURANT This restaurant is probably the busiest on the mountain but the food is great so people keep coming back. Merritt’s is located at the bottom of Cruiser Chair on the Merritt’s Spur area. There is the restaurant/bistro indoors or the quick snack BBQ outside. The quality of food is very good for the number of people they serve and the choice of fresh homemade and hearty fare is tough to beat.
BLACK SALLEES This restaurant is named after a genus of Snowgum Eucalypt and not surprisingly is located at the top of “Snowgums” Chairlift. This is another large volume restaurant offering shelter from the elements and a large range of lunch options. There is also a large outdoor deck area that is quite pleasant on a sunny day. When the weather is fine they often have a BBQ operating outside for quick service.
THE RIVER INN BEER KELLER. This is the alternative option for food at Friday Flat. With a bavarian beer keller decor and live music it is a lively place for lunch or a great spot to retire to if the legs are aching from too many turns. It is located in the River Inn which is tucked in behind the bottom of Gunbarrel Chairlift. Just head across the bridge. The Cafe has a large outdoors deck overlooking Merritt’s Creek.
