The Australian Mountain Bike series hits Thredbo.

The Australian mountain bike series will take on a whole new look this summer, with two new exciting formats to be introduced which will favour riders and spectators alike. The 2011/12 season will be split into two, with the cross country riders vying for the ‘All Mountain Cup’ and the downhillers contesting the ‘Gravity Cup’. The new formats will allow for growth in both disciplines, by offering riders the chance to compete in additional events over the weekend.

The All Mountain Cup will include a number of additional elements over the course of each two-day event. Riders will compete in a stage-like environment, in which performance results will be tallied to determine the overall event winner.

In addition to the centrepiece Olympic Cross Country event, other formats such as the cross country eliminator (four-cross for cross country), cross country time trial, cross country enduro (25km to 50km), Super D (downhill cross country) and the return of the short course event will be scheduled over the weekend of competition.

In the Gravity Cup, all downhill classes will now have seeding races on the Saturday, followed by finals on the Sunday.

The Thredbo Round of the series will be held on the weekend of December 11th and 12th.

Thredbo Blues Festival 2012 January

The 17th Thredbo Blues Festival is just around the corner and this year’s program promises to be a state of origin battle for your soul. Two of Australia’s biggest sounding R & B bands will be competing for the undivided attention of your dancing shoes. The first is Marco Goldsmith’s Blue Heat from Melbourne, a band that sweeps all before it in drive and energy and the other blues juggernaut is the original line up of the Mighty Reapers including Dave Brewer and Robert Susz, a Sydney based funk/soul line up that keeps on delivering tight, punchy and professional to the last note.

Hard rockin’ blues men Kevin Borich, Harry Brus and Darren Jack are all in Thredbo for the weekend so the dancing shoes will keep on smokin’ . If your feets start failin’ from all the dancing, Jeff Lang will be here to grab audiences in his vice like grip with an atmospheric journey through his roots blues world full of slide, sleight of hand and straight out power.

The girls are on the program as well with US duo Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey from Tucson Arizona in Thredbo for the first time singing up a boogie woogie storm and another Thredbo debut for Jo Jo Smith an Aussie blues songstress with a gutsy style and energy that will see her fit right in. There are plenty more names on the program and with music running from Friday evening until the early hours of Monday morning there is plenty of time to catch up with most of them.

Performances are in venues all over the village, on the mountain and in the village square. The Arthaus is a new opportunity for artists, sculptors and photographers to learn and develop their skills in the heart of the Snowy Mountains. Arthaus courses cover the fundamentals. Starting with basic drawing, water colour, gouache and photography lessons exploring ideas on paper, canvas and through your viewfinder.

Drawing and photography walks follow to inspire everyone from the novice to the experienced artist in residence. Thredbo is a great place for artists looking to build their portfolio, develop their craft or just as an escape with a difference. We offer a fun, friendly, and inspiring environment.

Australian Interschools Mountain Bike Championships 3rd Night Free!

The 14th annual Australian Interschools MTB Championships is on again in Thredbo from the March 18 to 20. Hosted by the South East Mountain Bike Company this is the country’s premier school aged mountain bike competition.
Whether you are a seasoned pro, or just learning the ropes – the Australian Interschools Mountain Bike Championships provides a fun introduction to mountain bike racing. Open to all secondary schools – public and private – the Interschools weekend features racing over all the mountain bike disciplines: downhill, 4X, short and long track cross country.

Entrants are encouraged to particpate in all four events, with individual cyclists vying for the King and Queen of the Mountain crowns, and school teams for the prestigious Schools Shield.

With so much on over the weekend it would be a rush to cram it all into 2 days so why not take advantage of our excellent value 3rd night free offer and stay on for longer.
