The All Mountain Cup will include a number of additional elements over the course of each two-day event. Riders will compete in a stage-like environment, in which performance results will be tallied to determine the overall event winner.

In addition to the centrepiece Olympic Cross Country event, other formats such as the cross country eliminator (four-cross for cross country), cross country time trial, cross country enduro (25km to 50km), Super D (downhill cross country) and the return of the short course event will be scheduled over the weekend of competition.

In the Gravity Cup, all downhill classes will now have seeding races on the Saturday, followed by finals on the Sunday.

The Thredbo Round of the series will be held on the weekend of December 11th and 12th.

Hard rockin’  blues men Kevin Borich, Harry Brus and Darren Jack are all in Thredbo for the weekend so the dancing shoes will keep on  smokin’ .  If your feets start failin’  from all the dancing,   Jeff Lang will be here to grab audiences in his vice like grip with an atmospheric journey through his roots blues world full of slide, sleight of hand and straight out power.

The girls are on the program as well with US duo Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey from Tucson Arizona in Thredbo for the first time singing up a boogie woogie storm and another Thredbo debut for Jo Jo Smith  an Aussie blues songstress with a gutsy style and energy that will see her fit right in.  There are plenty more names on the program and with music running from Friday evening until the early hours of Monday morning there is plenty of time to catch up with most of them.

Childrens Art Workshops

These fun workshops are available for children 6 – 8 years and 9 – 11 years. The workshops are run by friendly practicing painters, sculptors and photographers who will encourage and teach your children to develop their art skills while enjoying the unique alpine environment. All materials are provided, workshops will involve both indoor and outdoor art activities.

Riders were rewarded for their support with picture perfect weather on Saturday for the mass ride into Thredbo (see our video) .  The event is organised by the Steven Walter Fund to raise money for childhood cancer research.  Steven Walter was a keen young motorcycle rider who lost his battle with cancer and in his last days, asked that something be done to fight the disease that took his life.  His mother Sue and friends started the Snowy Ride to raise money for the cause and it has gone from strength to strength,  raising in excess of $4 million since it began.

While the environmental flows like this  one will help to get the rivers ecosystem working again,  there is still plenty of discussion about the merits of releasing this volume of water down the river versus using it within the Snowy Hydro Scheme to generate clean, renewable electricity.  It is a complex issue with good arguments for and against releasing the water.  However whatever the perspective on the water releases there’s no denying  this release from Jindabyne  was a spectacular event.

I spend a lot of time dreaming about skiing in the Ramsheads.   Wild, broken outcrops of ancient granite covered in wind carved ice separate hidden valleys and deep gorges.  With gentle cruising slopes or steep chutes and long runs the skiing in the Ramsheads is perfect for  a bit of spring time afternoon picnic touring or some serious adrenaline charged peak bagging.  Places like Bogong Creek, Leather Barrell Gorge and Twin Valleys are like hidden worlds waiting to be discovered.  What makes touring out of Thredbo so special is that the Ski lifts deliver you close to the top of the range so in 40 minutes or less you can be standing at the top of one of these  mystical places getting ready for a long run in perfect conditions with no tracks in sight and just your friends to share it with.

Just in case you haven’t worked it out yet.  Once you finish this pristine run dropping into the snow covered silence, you have to turn around and climb back up to where you started. This is hard work, no chairlifts or skidoos to help with this part,  but for me that is the part I love the most.  The climb out is peaceful and absorbing as you get into a rhythm with your breath and the wind the only sounds and a view that is priceless.

It worth noting that the other things  missing in the back-country are the Ski Patrol and signs  You are on your own out back and you have to know where you are all the time.  If the weather comes in it can get very tricky very quickly and many people have perished in this environment.  Going with a guide is a very good idea.  If you are interested in experiencing backcountry skiing or even snow shoeing through the Ramshead Range, both  K7  advertures and the Thredbo Snow Sports run tours from Thredbo.
